Experience
My teaching experience includes 2 years teaching 4th grade at Great Hearts Academy in Phoenix, and two years as a music assistant at St. John's College. For my undergraduate studies, I chose to pursue a classical education in the seven Liberal Arts (grammar, logic, rhetoric, arithmetic, geometry, astronomy and music). This was both an education in the classics, and by way of the classic pedagogical practice of dialectic conversation. I spent my four years studying the great works of philosophy, history, literature, poetry, theology, mathematics, science, and music all in seminar discussions of source texts. By taking this kind of an education, I have become convinced of the value and efficacy (not to mention pleasure) of learning through a direct encounter with the great authors in every subject, and then testing what has been learned through conversation. Modern educational practice, on the contrary, uses expensive text books, lecture notes, problem sets, quizzes, etc. to present students with pre-formulated concepts and prefabricated ideas, and then demands regurgitation of those concepts and ideas at regular intervals. At no time during this process does the student gain his/her own understanding of concepts and ideas. Instead they either forget what they've memorized as soon as the test is over, or, if they've managed to internalize it, don't really understand what they think they've learned. This being the case, I offer my students an alternative way of learning (and retaining) whatever subject matter they may be studying. It does not depend on memorization, but on a willingness to demand real, personal understanding, and to not be satisfied with anything less.
